North of Emmerstedt underground brown coal was mined. In 1908 the Emma power plant was put into operation. For the workers, houses were built directly at the pit Emma, today they are all demolished. The degradation has been discontinued for a long time. The tunnels were not dug straight into the earth as usual, but diagonally and not very deep, so coal mining was not of very high quality either. Today, there are funnels everywhere in the forest caused by the collapse of tunnels.
