Machrie Moor Standing Stones is the collective name for a breathtaking collection of ancient stone circles, cairns, standing stones, and field systems on the wild and lonely Machrie Moor. It is worth taking some time to explore this Neolithic centre of ritual and domestic activity, which was built roughly 4,000 years ago. The standing stones are free to visit and open year-round.

Embark on an easy hike across Machrie Moor on the Isle of Arran, a distinctive moorland landscape offering a sense of wild solitude. This accessible route covers 1.3 miles (2.1 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 102 feet (31 metres), taking about 33 minutes to complete. You will follow well-marked tractor tracks and grassy paths, passing ancient ruins and a disused old farm. On clear days, enjoy expansive views towards the Arran mountains. While generally flat, sections can be muddy after rain, so wear suitable footwear. You will also pass through several gates on this route.

This trail is suitable for all fitness levels and families, making it a great choice for a quick outing. Since parts of the path can become muddy, especially after rain, it is wise to wear appropriate waterproof hiking boots. The route traverses private farmland, so please be mindful of your surroundings and respect the land. There are no steps on the trail, ensuring a smooth journey across the moorland.

Machrie Moor is renowned for its extraordinary archaeological significance, home to one of Scotland's richest prehistoric landscapes. You will discover a dense concentration of ancient remains, including six closely grouped stone circles, standing stones, and burial cairns. Look for specific points of interest like "Fingal's Cauldron Seat," a prominent double-ringed stone circle, and a large, claw-like stone. These megalithic monuments, some dating back to 3500 BC, are steeped in local myths and legends, offering a unique glimpse into early farming communities and their ceremonial practices.
