"Feldspar, quartz and mica, I will never forget the three" once rhymed a schoolmaster so that his students could easily memorize the constituents of the deep rock. From the middle of the 19th century, granite had become a building material for which the demand rose steadily. The building construction required bricks, window and door frames, steps and platforms, the road construction paving stones and borders and the railroad ballast and stones for bridge construction.
Granite covers an area of 4600 km² in Lusatia alone. That is the reason why countless rifts arose between Kamenz and the Königshain Mountains. The area around the Klosterberg between Demitz-Thumitz and Schmölln quickly developed into the most important and largest mining area in Saxony. The steadily increasing demand for granite products led to the development of many quarries. These in turn attracted workers who settled in the villages around the Klosterberg. In the hundred years between 1850 and 1950, the population of Demitz-Thumitz increased almost tenfold.
