Rural chapel that in the Middle Ages served as a parish for the dispersed population of the neighbourhood. Legally, it depended on the castle of Mataró and ecclesiastically, it was a suffragan of Santa María de «Civitas fractos» or Mataró. The first mention of a chapel dedicated to Saint Martin is from the year 878.[2] The place name Mata appears in 963. The chapel appears in several documents from the 11th and 12th centuries in land boundaries In 1065, Berenguer Armengol bequeathed to the church of San Martín de Mata the wheat that he had there. The year 1096 seems to already appear as a suffragan of Santa María de Mataró. Judge Ramón Guinart in his will bequeathed to the church two ounces for light, an antiphonary and a hymnal and the donation of some land with vineyards and olive trees made by Bishop Oleguer of Barcelona to Ramón Mir in Santa María «Civitas fractos» is remarkable. , Sant Andreu de Llavaneres and Sant Martí de Mata.

This temple was called, for a time, Santa María de Mata (mentioned in 1345), probably because of the image of the Virgin that was on the altar, next to that of San Martín. There are several documented reforms. In 1581, in 1767 according to an inscription on the side wall «YEAR MDCCLXVII SE mend» in which the baroque altar was built.

In 1926 part of the roof collapsed and the baroque altar looked pitiful. In 1933 it was in a dilapidated state, without a roof and the walls were about to fall. The owner, Pablo Schleicher consolidated and redid the roof. Other people from the neighborhood and the Mataró Scientific-Excursionist Association collaborated in restoring the baroque altarpiece that, with the images, was burned during the civil war (1936-1939). In 1955 the walls, the roof, the pavement and the now stone altar were rebuilt. The archaeologist Marià Ribas y Bertran carried out excavations. In 1976 several burials were found and documented.
