Obelisks were an important part of the religious life of the ancient Egyptians. They were usually placed in pairs in front of temples. The human and animal symbols of the characters always looked towards the path to the temple, the side faces towards the temple.

    The Obelisk of Hatshepsut

This is the most impressive of all. It stands between the 4th and 5th pylons.

Size & Weight: It is approximately 30 meters tall and weighs about 340 tons. This makes it the tallest standing obelisk in Egypt.

Material: It is made from a single piece of pink granite quarried in Aswan.

Special Feature: Originally, the top was coated with electrum (an alloy of gold and silver) to reflect sunlight and make it shine far and wide.

In ancient Egypt, the obelisk, like the pyramid, represented the rays of the sun god turned into stone and was the connection between the local world and the world of the gods. Obelisks usually stood in pairs in front of pyramids or temples.
