The Sanctuary of the Blessed Giacomo is a majestic convent complex on the outskirts of Bitetto, steeped in spirituality and a destination for pilgrimages and religious itineraries.
Built in the fifteenth century, the convent stands next to the seventeenth-century church with a facade embellished with Doric capitals, an extraordinary treasure chest of art with three naves with barrel vaults and baroque windows, where the ancient frescoes of the Pietà niche survive.

Blessed Giacomo, son of Leonardo Varingez and Beatrice, was born in Zara, in Dalmatia, around the year 1400. He arrived in Apulia at the age of 18-20 thanks to some fellow merchants. Here he met the Franciscan community of the local convent and, seizing the vocation, took on the Franciscan habit around 1437.
