Without a doubt, the Sanctuary of Cortes is the most visited place in the province of Albacete.
In 1976, an article by W. A. Christian on Spanish sanctuaries had been published; in it he made a classification of the importance of these centers of popular devotion, today also called local, based on the geographical area occupied by the devotees who went to each one of them; established four national sanctuaries and a dozen regional ones; Among the latter was that of the Virgin of Cortes de Alcaraz, this being the only one in the Castilian-La Mancha region that was considered to be of this category. From this, without a doubt, it was inferred that the Cortes was a very significant sanctuary, and today it maintains that character.

One of the most important Pilgrimage Centers in Spain is the Sanctuary of the Virgen de Cortes, in Alcaraz. It is one of the tourist resources of the town most demanded by tourists. Religious center par excellence of the region.

It was inaugurated on September 8, 1222. Its layout is circular and has a baroque altarpiece on the Main Altar made in 1727. In 1265, Alfonso X the Wise met with his father-in-law Jaime I of Aragon to delimit conquest lands. Both are informed of the appearance of the Virgin and decide to give a contribution for the expansion of the Church and the construction of a guesthouse.

Its church, museum, reliquary, souvenir shops and bar are a must see in Alcaraz for all believers and tourists.

The Virgin of Cortes is highly revered for how miraculous it has been throughout time.

VIII Centenary of his appearance and I Centenary of his coronation in 2022.
