The current bridge was built in the 15th century. The first documentary reference is found in the Cortes of Lisbon of 1439, in which the envoys from Silves refer to the reconstruction work on a bridge. Other documents indicate that the bridge was still under construction in 1459 but that it was finished in 1473.
At the beginning of the 17th century, the bridge lost two arches and had to be restored. In 1716 it was restored again by the stonemason Inácio Mendes, but reusing the previous structures.[1] The stylistic structure of the bridge, however, was not changed in these renovations.[2]

In the 20th century, an arch of the bridge, located on the right bank, was eliminated to build the marginal avenue. In 1950, a concrete bridge was built nearby, and the old bridge became a pedestrian bridge.

Silves was the capital of Algarve for many centuries.

Silves is a nice town, with an interesting castle and several nice cafes. Worth a trip. We passed through on our bikes and then returned on a rest day to visit the castle and stroll through the streets and have lunch.
