Sperlonga is one of the most exclusive and well-known tourist resorts in the Lazio region, loved since the times of the ancient Romans and especially by the emperor Tiberius who had his own imperial villa in these places whose magnificent remains can still be visited.

The town is located along the S. S. Flacca (between Terracina and Gaeta) and is perched on a rocky spur that dominates the coast in order to better defend itself from pirate raids. The name, Sperlonga, recalls the natural caves (speluncae) that point its coast and among these the most famous is the "cave or cavern of Tiberius" incorporated into the emperor's villa.
