A little further to the west there is also a smaller sand hill with views, but this is wider and higher and therefore offers more and better views over the heath, forests and sand paths. At the foot of it is a bench and a star spot sign. After all, this place was awarded two landscape stars. On the sign you can read that this sand hill, at 87 meters, is the highest land dune you will find here. It is part of the dune belt on the edge of the Kempen Plateau.

Take a stroll around it for various views and viewpoints if you like taking photos. There is also a good chance that you will see rabbits and hares (or their fleeing tails) from here. More about the land dune and the star spot at komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/6054037

Here you will find a star spot sign for the "vast heath plains" of Ten Haagdoornheide. A star spot is a location in the Lage Kempen regional landscape that was rewarded with a number of stars during a survey in 2007-2008 by surveyed holidaymakers because it belonged to the top 20 most beautiful spots out of 140 entries based on 8 criteria: 'sight, silence , smell, peculiarity, cultural-historical value, beauty, X-factor and naturalness'. Two-star spots are "worth a detour". And that is also the number of stars awarded to the vast heath plains of Ten Haagdoornheide. The wooden stand with texts and information reminds of it and also explains why. More specifically, the star spot is on the inland dune from which you have a nice view over the inland dune and which is part of the dune belt on the edge of the Kempische Plateau as stated on the sign. With its 87 meters, the land dune is the highest point of the nature reserve. Incidentally, nearby is a star spot that received one star: the mysterious marshes of Ten Haagdoornheide; more about that here: komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/5923564

The list of all star spots in the Lage Kempen regional landscape can be found at scribd.com/document/115757822/Landschaps Sterren

Ten Haagdoornheide, together with the Teut in Zonhoven, forms one of the most valuable heathland landscapes in Limburg. In order to maintain the heathland, it is grazed by sheep (a total of around 350!). Part of the herd moves around under the supervision of two shepherds with their sheepdogs. The other part stays in place and grazes within a fence. Another way to maintain the heathland is by ‘plaggen’. In this method, the top layer of soil is cut so that new young heather plants can grow. In the past, this was done with a shovel and the sod mixed with manure was spread on the fields. Nowadays, ‘plaggen’ is done with machines. Thanks to the grazing and modern methods of heathland management, many animals feel at home on this heathland, such as the smooth snake, the woodlark and the wheatear… The star spot is located on an inland dune, which is part of a dune belt on the edge of the Kempen Plateau. At 87m, it is the highest point in the nature reserve.
