According to legend, Napoleon had it built in 1797 as a supply route for his troops.
The official name of the former strategic supply route and today's Napoleonstrasse/Strada Napoleonica cycling and hiking trail is "Strada Vicentina", named after the engineer Giacomo Vicentini, according to whose plans the path was expanded in 1821.
