Hellfire Pass is a mountain section of the Thailand-Burma railway, completed in 1943 (the so-called "Death Railway", which also crossed the River Kwai Bridge). According to estimates, up to 90,000 prisoners of war and forced laborers of various nationalities died during the construction of the railway. Today, a museum commemorates these atrocities of war, and relatives of the victims still commemorate their dead at small memorials.
