It's worth taking a look at the mouth of the Agly: most people will be surprised that a large sandbank prevents the river from flowing out into the sea. This means you can cross the river over the beach here with dry feet.
But why is it like that? Strong sea currents parallel to the coast have created a compensation coast here in the Golfe de Lion. The surf erodes the sand on the coast and deposits it again in the current shadow. This is how sand is constantly being shifted and this is how the lagoons of Leucate and Canet came into being: former sea bays were replaced by a long sand barrier called a lido, or spit in German.
Such a spit here barricades the Agly, whose water pressure is probably too weak to break through the barrier.
