Have you ever seen the Fellaria Glacier? No? Well then it is an experience that you absolutely must do!
We are located in Valtellina (Lombardy, Italy) to be exact in Valmalenco, the central Rhaetian Alps, under the summit of Mount Bernina (4000 meters) in that territory located on the border between Italy and Switzerland (Grisons).
The "Marson" Glaciological Path of the Fellaria Glacier is a medium difficulty path dedicated to hikers with good experience behind them and suitable trekking clothing, the path has a relatively short duration and a reasonable difference in height.
This type of track must be faced in the period from May to October, thus avoiding the winter and spring months. Given the altitude that is reached (about 2700 MT), we could find a lot of water coming from the melting of the glacier.
The path starts from the Gera Dam, one of the largest in Italy, about 2 km long which allows the production of large quantities of electricity which will then be distributed to the rest of the Lombardy region.
After passing the barrier of the easily surpassable dam, the easy path begins which in the space of an hour between colorful panoramas and sublime views will allow us to get to the Bignami refuge where we can refresh ourselves to face the last stretch that will allow us to reach the language of the glacier.
Across humid ledges and trails on coarse-grained scree we will admire a lunar landscape, walking on the glacier moraines and breathing the air of almost 3,000 meters above sea level.
In about an hour we will reach the glacial tongue, an amphitheater in all its beauty, accompanied by the noises of the ice and the vivid colors, but also by the melancholy caused by the melting of the ice due to climate warming.
The return will be made on the same path, with the possibility of making the only possible variant that goes around the Gera dam and then enjoying some unique and unforgettable photographic shots.
