After the liberation of the Turkish threat (1684), the pilgrimage reached its climax here. Almost 100 years later, Emperor Joseph the Second brought the pilgrimage to a standstill with his ban. Only in 1889 was the pilgrimage indulgence for St. Marienkirchen confirmed by a papal letter. Since 1984 pilgrimages have been held on the Fatima days from May to October.
