The Gieselau valley was formed 130,000 years ago during the Saale Ice Age, when an ice sheet up to 2 km thick pushed material such as sand and clay in front of it. Meltwater eventually washed out the valley. The Gieselau has a relatively high flow rate and was already a popular settlement in the Stone Age. The river used to flow into the Eider - today into the Kiel Canal, which cut through the course of the river.
