Here for several decades, an Etruscan community lived together with a Celtic one.

This sharing, more unique than rare, has been brought to light over years of excavations by archaeologists, students and volunteers from the University of Bologna and the Municipality of Monterenzio.

But the site does not only owe its uniqueness to the co-presence of the two civilizations.

Due to the unprecedented association of inhabited areas, necropolises and sacred areas, Monte Bibele has proved to be one of the places of greatest interest for Celt archeology in all of Italy and the most consistent Celtic example of urban planning, because it is made up of sectors functionally differentiated, completed by a burial ground and two places of worship.

And the walls of the houses, the road areas and a large public cistern are still visible.

The first discoveries relating to the pre-Roman settlement of Monte Bibele occurred during the Second World War, when a unit of German troops, stationed in one of the strong points of the Gothic line, intercepted some skeletons which were later found to belong to the burial ground of the community which lived in those places between the middle of the fourth and the beginning of the second century.
