The Oberer Schalker Graben is a historic moat in the Upper Harz Mountains that is well developed for tourism and is about nine kilometers long. It was built around 1716 to supply the mines around Bockswiese and Hahnenklee and mainly collected the water from the southern slope of the Schalke to make it usable for mining.

The beginning of the moat is in the upper valley of the river Schalke about 500 meters downstream from its source and south-east of the summit of the mountain of the same name at about 623 meters above sea level. In this area, five such historical ditches lie close together within sight. The Oberer Schalker Graben is the highest of these. It is accompanied over large sections of the "Schalker Grabenweg". This hiking trail is largely based on the former service route required for maintenance work.
