Russian campaign over the Swiss Alps
General Suworow is well known in central Switzerland to this day. The Russian war strategist led a campaign over seven Alpine passes from northern Italy to the Glarnerland in the 18th century.
At the end of the 18th century, a wave of political upheaval gripped Europe. Influenced by the Enlightenment, ideals of freedom and human rights were discussed. Different political attitudes and worldviews clashed. The old confederation became the venue for armed conflicts. In the first coalition war between 1792 and 1797, Switzerland tried to maintain its neutrality and came under increasing pressure in the process. The warring parties of European countries wanted to secure strategically important passages across the Alps. The loosely organized form of the Old Confederation could not withstand the military pressure and in 1798, under French occupation, became the "Helvetic Republic".
In 1799 Russia, Austria and England joined forces to counterattack powerful France. There was also resistance to France and the new Helvetic Republic in central Switzerland. Russia was seen by the Swiss as an ally in the fight against the French, the population hoped for help from the Russian troops.
