Count Palatine Ottheinrich (1502-1559) had the mighty renaissance castle built as the residence of the principality of Palatinate-Neuburg, which emerged in 1505 from the inheritance disputes between the Palatinate and Bavarian Wittelsbachers. 1665-70 it received its baroque east wing, the round towers of which dominate the view. The courtyard facade, decorated in sgraffito technique, and the castle chapel painted by Hans Bocksberger in 1543, the earliest Protestant church in Germany, are unique.
The newly designed museum wing "The Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg" can be seen on the main floor of the east wing. The impressive panorama of princely history unfolds in the former living and state rooms of the Palatinate-Neuburg princes. Around 550 works of art - portraits and valuable tapestries, weapons, furniture and valuable handicrafts - illustrate an exciting chapter in Palatinate-Bavarian history.
Among the most precious treasures that can be seen in Neuburg Castle are the church textiles from the Neuburg Ursuline Monastery, which Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz donated in 1698.
