Theologian Hans Tausen (1494-1561) is one of the most important leaders of the Reformation in Denmark. Although he was supposedly the son of a farmer, as a monk at Antvorskov Monastery he had the opportunity to study theology at various universities, including the University of Wittenberg, where he met Martin Luther. He soon joined Luther's reform movement and brought his rebellious ideas back home. However, in his confrontation with the Catholic Church in Denmark, he encountered considerable resistance (not least when he married!). After the Reformation in 1536, he received increasing recognition, and in 1542 he became Bishop of Ribe.

August Saaby's bronze statue by Hans Adolf Brorson, 1895.
Brorson was the Bishop of Ribe from 1741 to 1764 and wrote more than 100 hymns that are preserved in the Danish Hymn Book. His hymn "Den yndigste rose er funden" (The most beautiful rose was found) is played every day at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the Borgertårnet in Dom zu Ribe (the town tower).

The statue has stood in the place where Ansgar's statue stands today since 1913. It was relocated to its current location next door in December 2015.

Hans Tausen's house, south of Ribe Cathedral, dates from the 16th century and is the last remnant of the bishopric where the Lutheran bishops, including Hans Tausen, lived.
