Landwehr, Landgraben and Landhege denote border marking or border security works and enclosures of settlement areas with the right of enclosure or entire territories.
These settlement protection systems are mostly dated to the High and Late Middle Ages and in individual cases have lengths of over a hundred kilometers. However, comparable earthworks have been mentioned since ancient times.
The Roman Limes is the best-known version of an early Landwehr. The Danewerk also belongs to this group of barriers.
