It is the most common tree in the Canary Archipelago, from which it is endemic. It can reach a height of more than 60 m. Pine has been used since ancient times, especially wood, firewood, with which everything is built, from weapons and tools to boats and houses. It has also served as fuel for small industries. The aborigines used pine needles as stuffing and pine nuts as food. In the past, the tops of the archipelago were abundant with huge pines, but after the conquest they came in large numbers due to the interest that the firewood aroused. This species has a very special feature that makes the tops of the islands still covered with vegetation , and that is that the Canary Island pine... is fire resistant! This idiosyncrasy is due to the thickness of the bark and the trunk's ability to flower (it germinates again even when it has lost all its leaves and branches), which allows it to survive moderate fires.
