The line from Neuenmarkt to Bayreuth was the first Bavarian railway line to be built by contract with the state (Pachtbahngesetz). The city of Bayreuth financed the construction of the line and then leased it to the Bavarian state.
On November 28, 1853, it was opened by the Royal Bavarian State Railways as a branch of the Ludwig South-North Railway and one of the first branch lines in Bavaria. In 1905 the leased line was nationalized.
From December 28, 1896, the Neuenmarkt–Bad Berneck railway branched off at Schlömen, which was extended to Bischofsgrün in 1898. From Neuenmarkt to Schlömen, where the block post became a signal box, the trains also used the track of the leased railway. On the Pentecost holidays in 1986, a multiple-unit train with several passenger cars ran the route for the last time. The last section from Schlömen to Lanzendorf, which was still used for freight traffic, was finally shut down on June 30, 2006.

Very beautiful, very old bridge. In wet weather, the path there is quite soft.

Great photo spot. The reflection in the water is suitable for playing. Next door is a rest area with a bench and table in the parking lot.Update July '23: The Main has completely dried up after we had flooded a week earlier. Currently the water only runs through one of the 3 arches!
