Gokyo Lakes were named after Gokyo Ri peak. These lakes are the world's highest freshwater lake system comprising six main lakes, of which Gokyo IV - Tonak Pokhari is the largest. Gokyo III - Dudh Pokhari is located next to Gokyo hamlet. In 2007, Gokyo and associated wetlands have been designated a Ramsar site (List of Wetlands of International Importance)
