Traces of the old Christiansburg, which was built by the Danish king Christian V in the 17th century, can still be found in the harbor area. A site plan board shows the old fortress ramparts and moats.
In 1733 a sluice was built, the section in front of the dike was designed as a landing stage for ships. The development of shipping was hesitant at first. Only with the start of industrial growth in the middle of the 19th century did the port of Varel experience its heyday. After 1865, with the start of large-scale shipping, the importance of the port of Varel decreased. Varel only had a certain status as a fishing port. From 1950 its importance grew again, so that the lock built in 1846 no longer met the requirements of shipping. In 1977 the new Wilhelm Kamman lock was opened.
