Since these old chestnuts were planted on the Karlslust by "Duke Karl II of Zweibrücken", they are called the "Duke Chestnuts". The "Karlslust" was the duke's pleasure garden around his palace.

It was also Duke Charles II August who planted the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) - a species that has its natural distribution area on the southern edge of the Alps - in Homburg and thus (because the sweet chestnut naturally rejuvenates in the area) created the basis in the first place, for the so important "noble hardwood-rich mixed stock" on the Karlsberg today from a forestry point of view. The 200-250 year old duke chestnuts, which are still preserved today and designated as a natural monument, bear witness to the great times of that time.
