The Ponte Vecchio is the symbol of the city of Bassano del Grappa, but at the same time of resilience and rebirth. Three times destroyed and three times rebuilt, the Ponte Vecchio has retained its architecture for almost 500 years.

Entirely covered in wood, with the pillars sinking into the Brenta river, it is also known by the name of Ponte degli Alpini. Considered as one of the most characteristic bridges in the Veneto and Italy.

The Ponte Vecchio dates back to 1567, designed by Andrea Palladio and, in 2019, it was proclaimed a national monument.

Its structure is made of wood, it is 58 meters long and 11 meters high.

      Ponte Vecchio / Old Bridge
The symbol of Bassano del Grappa is the Ponte Vecchio (or Vecio in Veneto): a concentrate of architectural genius, romanticism, historical memory and suggestion. It is a covered wooden bridge that connects the two banks of the Brenta in the heart of the city. The current form dates back to the sixteenth century. Postcard image par excellence, ideal subject for an Instagram post, the Ponte Vecchio is not only beautiful but also very functional: thanks to its brilliant designer, the same Andrea Palladio to whom we owe the most beautiful and famous Venetian villas in the world. It was he who wanted to build the wooden bridge because he was convinced that the elasticity of this material could counteract the impetuousness of the river. Despite several damages from water and bombing, the bridge still stands, each time renovated according to Palladio's original project. The bridge is also known as Ponte degli Alpini, a name dedicated to the troops who crossed it to the front during the First World War. Due to its strategic importance in the subsequent World War, it was blown up by the partisans and rebuilt after the end of the war. Maintenance work is still almost a constant today, but that does not detract from the charm of this extraordinary work: crossing the Ponte degli Alpini is one of the best experiences in Bassano del Grappa. Feel free to do it, because you can enjoy a wonderful view of the mountains from the bridge and then take the time to admire them as a whole. The best places to photograph the bridge are the banks of the Brenta on the west side, the walkway in front of the castle and the terrace of Piazza Terraglio. - veneto.info/vicenza/bassano-del-grappa

        Ponte Vecchio (Bassano del Grappa)
The Ponte Vecchio, also Ponte di Bassano or Ponte degli Alpini, over the Brenta in Bassano del Grappa is a wooden bridge from the Renaissance that was built in 1569 according to plans by Andrea Palladio and was repeatedly rebuilt according to this model after it was destroyed. There were already a number of bridges at this location, which were destroyed several times. Because the bridge not only connected the settlements on both banks of the river, but also led the strategically important trade route to Vicenza across the river, over the centuries the bridges were damaged or destroyed several times not only by the Brenta, but also by human hands.
