The confluence of the Eselsbach and Düssel rivers is an important hydrological point in the Düsseldorf area, where two smaller streams converge and continue their course as the Düssel. This location is of both natural and technical importance for local water and landscape management.

Historically, the waterways originally existed in a natural, partly meandering form, but were repeatedly regulated and channeled in the wake of increasing urbanization and land development. The aim was to prevent flooding, stabilize water flow, and protect the surrounding residential areas. The confluence itself was technically designed to optimize water runoff and prevent erosion damage to the banks.

Technically, the area is equipped with bank reinforcements and bed protection made of natural materials such as gravel and stones to ensure stability and preserve ecological quality. In addition, culverts and possibly small weirs have been installed to regulate the water level and allow for controlled drainage during heavy rainfall. These measures are part of an integrated flood protection concept that aims to sustainably combine nature conservation with urban infrastructure.

Ecologically, the confluence offers diverse habitats: The varying flow velocity and structural diversity create refuges and spawning grounds for fish, amphibians, and aquatic insects. The near-natural design promotes biodiversity and improves water quality through self-purification processes.

For hikers and nature lovers, the confluence is an interesting place that illustrates the dynamics of waterways in an urban environment. It demonstrates how technical interventions can be combined with near-natural design to ensure both functionality and ecological diversity.
