    Hiking

The metal structure bivouac (2647 m) named after Enrico Olivero was inaugurated in August 2018.
It is in a panoramic position, between the Longet and Bes lakes. The internal structure, with a pointed arch, is entirely made of wood. Always open, it is equipped with 6 beds, two comfortable platforms and 6 stools. There are solar panels that provide light for a couple of hours in the evening.

    Hiking

A very pleasant night on Monday, August 11, 2025.
We slept comfortably with 7 people. A waterfall with potable water is accessible 13 minutes from this refuge: follow the H2O trail and the blue dots to get there.

Embark on a difficult 6.8-mile (10.9 km) hike to Col de Longet and Bivacco Olivero, a challenging route that gains 2722 feet (830 metres) over approximately 5 hours and 15 minutes. The trail begins with a flat section before a steep forest ascent, leading you through bucolic landscapes with tranquil streams and expansive meadows. You will encounter several picturesque lakes, including Lac de Longet and Laghi del Bes, their intense blue waters often framed by green vegetation. From the Col de Longet, you are rewarded with magnificent panoramic views of prominent peaks like Mont Viso and Pic d'Asti.

This trail is generally considered difficult, requiring excellent physical condition and good sure-footedness due to its varied terrain. Some sections can be rocky, including areas with vertical stone slabs known as "ciaperet," while others feature grassy slopes or muddy patches near the lakes. The path ascending towards Col Longet from Chianale can be particularly demanding. Always wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for significant elevation changes throughout your journey.

A key feature of this hike is the modern Bivacco Enrico Olivero, inaugurated in 2018. This metal and wood structure is strategically positioned between the Longet and Bes lakes, offering panoramic views and serving as a resting point with six beds and solar-powered lighting. The Col de Longet itself is a historic border pass between France and Italy, adding a unique geographical element to your adventure. The area provides a genuine wilderness experience, free of paved roads and vehicle tracks, accessible only by foot or mountain bike.

Embark on the Petit Tour of Bric de Rubren, a difficult hiking route that takes you through diverse landscapes within Queyras Regional Natural Park. This challenging adventure covers 9.6 miles (15.5 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3917 feet (1194 metres), requiring approximately 7 hours and 32 minutes to complete. You will trek from marsh-like areas and shrub forests, ascending into golden meadows before the terrain transforms into rugged alpine scree leading to the Pas de Mongioia, offering exceptional panoramic views from the summit of Bric de Rubren.

Planning your visit requires careful consideration due to the route's demanding nature. A substantial portion of the trail lies above 3000 metres of altitude, so you should possess good physical condition and prior mountain experience. Be prepared for potentially challenging navigation, as some sections are poorly marked; bringing good orientation skills or a reliable GPS device is highly recommended for your safety and enjoyment.

This route is a true high-alpine experience, showcasing the dramatic beauty of the Southern Alps. As you hike, keep an eye out for stunning high-altitude lakes such as Lac de la Nière and Lake Longet, which add to the majestic scenery. Starting near the Ubaye river, the trail offers a deep immersion into the natural environment of this protected regional park, making it a notable journey for those seeking a profound connection with the mountains.

Embark on the difficult Bric de Rubren Loop, a challenging hike spanning 11.7 miles (18.9 km) with a significant elevation gain of 4265 feet (1300 metres). You can expect to spend around 8 hours and 39 minutes on this route. The trail leads you through highly varied terrain, from lush forests and marshy ponds to vast stony areas and scree slopes. Along the way, you will discover the beautiful Blue Lake and be rewarded with panoramic views of the Italian Alps, including the prominent Mont Viso, from higher elevations. The Rubren valley itself offers a wild beauty, sometimes compared to the steppes of Mongolia.

This loop crosses the border between France and Italy, offering a unique alpine experience. If you plan to split the long hike into two days, the route includes non-guarded refuges and bivouacs, such as Bivacco Enrico Olivero, for overnight stays. Be aware that you might encounter sheep herds and their protection dogs, known as patous, along the trail. Always give these dogs space and avoid disturbing the flock.

The Bric de Rubren Loop provides a distinct blend of both countries' alpine environments. This trail is notable for its dramatic changes in landscape, from verdant lowlands to exposed, rocky high-altitude sections. The journey offers a deep immersion into a remote mountain wilderness, making it a memorable adventure for experienced hikers. Consider your physical condition and endurance before setting out on this demanding route.
