This large—and at the same time magnificent—church, called "Santa Maria Maggiore," is one of the traditional seven pilgrimage churches that travelers to Rome absolutely must visit. The church is dedicated to the "Blessed Virgin Mary." Among many other sights inside, one of the side chapels contains a very special image of the Virgin Mary: "SALUS POPULI ROMANI," the "Salvation of the Roman People." It is highly venerated not only by the local population but also by Pope Francis, who often visited Santa Maria Maggiore to pray before it and was buried in this church on April 26, 2025—at his express request.
