The Dortmund-Ems Canal was completed in 1899 and carries inland shipping over 223 kilometers from the Dortmund port to the Ems near Gleesen, from where the Ems continues to the North Sea near Emden, or via the coastal canal to Oldenburg to the Hunte and the Weser leads.
