In the vicinity of Książ Castle, in the years 1911-1914, on the order of the Duke of Pszczyna and Prince John Henry XV von Pless, heir to the Hochbergs' fortune (owner of one of the largest estates in Europe at that time), a palm house was built. On the area of 1900 square meters, apart from the palm house, there was also a greenhouse, Japanese-style gardens, a fruit and vegetable garden, an area for growing shrubs and a rosarium adored by the Prince's wife - Maria Teresa Cornwallis-West, where, among others: roses were grown with snow-white petals. In the central part of the building there is a 15-meter glass building with date palms planted. On the roof of the palm house, a viewing gallery was created, from which you could admire the panorama of the area. The most remarkable, however, is the building material of the palm house - the walls for creepers and tunnels that form charming alleys are made of lumps of porous tuff brought straight from the slopes of the Sicilian Mount Etna.

Thanks to the palm house, the princely couple had a supply of fresh flowers and exotic fruit and vegetables for the princely table all year round.

Currently, the Palm House in Wałbrzych has about 80 species of plants from all over the world. You can see here, among others: dracaena, spiny spurge, prickly pear, coffee and banana bushes, as well as lemons and mandarins. Unfortunately, the beautiful rosarium that Wałbrzych could be famous for did not survive to that time. An interesting fact is that you can still find a rose with snow-white petals under the name Daisy in the world catalogs of flowers.

It was my first time there, even though I had already been to the castle several times. Next time I will also visit the palm house, because it is simply worth it.
