The church was built in the 12th century replacing a sacred building from the Longobard era which was in turn built, it is assumed, on a pagan temple.
Inside were kept the remains of Sant'Ercolano, hermit saint and patron saint of the Garda Riviera, later moved to the new parish church of Toscolano.
On the facade you can admire several medieval bas-reliefs depicting heads of beasts and men, griffins, double-tailed sirens, etc.
Inside, however, it is possible to admire some beautiful capitals and some fragments of frescoes from the 15th-16th century, one of which was rediscovered behind an altar.
Under the presbytery you can access the ancient crypt, closed in 1580 by Cardinal Borromeo and brought to light in 1962, where the sarcophagus containing the body of Sant'Ercolano was placed.
