The clue is in the name, Loch Long is a lengthy, 20-mile (32 km) stretch of sea water that reaches from the Firth of Clyde deep into the Southern Highlands to Arrochar. The loch's arrow-straight shape made it an ideal site for the Navy to test torpedoes, which they did between 1912 and 1986. It is still possible to visit the abandoned torpedo testing station on the loch's northern banks.
