Foligno was founded in pre-Roman times by the population of Umbrian Fulginates. The original settlement expanded in Roman times: the road system with parallel and perpendicular streets is still visible today, most likely derived from the Roman camp. Given its strategic position, in the center of the Umbrian Valley and at the mouth of the Topino River Valley, Foligno became an important commercial and logistic hub over the centuries. The Roman heritage can also be found in the traditional festival called "La giostra della Quintana", a jousting tournament and a historical event in costume. The term "Quintana" derives in fact from the name of a street in the Roman camp where the training of the soldiers took place. These had to try to put their spears in a ring hooked to the hand of a puppet.

It is famous, among other things, for the Giostra della Quintana, a historical re-enactment of knightly tournaments dating back to the first half of the 17th century.
The first rides take place around mid-June (challenge ride), the second around mid-September (revenge ride).
It is worth visiting the city, even more so on the occasion of the two Quintanas.
Highly recommended!!!!!
