The Duderstädter pillory: In earlier times people were chained to a collar for one to two hours for simple crimes and put in the pillory. Prison sentences were imposed for major offenses and the death penalty for serious crimes. For example, if you let your cattle graze in a strange meadow, you had to stay in the pillory for an hour. This form of punishment existed in Duderstadt until around 1840.
