In 1904 the large shaft furnace was built by Alois, Anton and Franz - all sons of Franz Reinagl. At that time it was one of the largest of its type in Central Europe. In 1926 the facility was purchased by Count Ernst Hoyos-Sprintzenstein and converted from coal to wood burning.

The firing process required around 9m³ of wood and 3m³ of stones to achieve a firing temperature of 2000°C. This then burned for 36 hours to extract around 3 tons of lime. The limestone was placed in the kiln and the result was said slaked lime.

The last time it was burned here was in 1935.

Remains of the “Müller oven” and the well-preserved “Reinagl oven” are still visible from the former 6 field ovens. The furnace block of the large shaft furnace is still preserved here - it is the only one of its type left in Austria.

Today the facility is preserved and maintained by the “Friends of the Thumeritz Lime Kilns” association, which was founded in 1998.
