Just before Grein, the Danube Cycle Path offers a stunning view of Greinburg Castle, which sits majestically overlooking the Danube. Begun around 1488, this castle is considered the oldest inhabited castle in Austria and is one of the country's most important Renaissance buildings.

Built by the Counts of Losenstein, it impresses visitors with its elegant arcaded courtyard and famous diamond-vaulted ceiling. Since the 17th century, the castle has been owned by the ducal family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Today, it houses the Upper Austrian Shipping Museum and is a popular destination for day trips.

A short stop on the Danube Cycle Path is well worth it – offering a magnificent view of both history and the Danube.

The castle stands on the granite rock Hohenstein above the town of Grein an der Donau. Greinburg Castle is considered the oldest residential castle in Austria and is a milestone in the development from castle to palace building. It is the first castle complex north of the Alps to be built entirely uniformly over a regularly planned floor plan. The castle was built as a four-tower complex with an additional gate tower, palace and chapel. The historical representative rooms are worth seeing: the atmospheric arcaded courtyard, the late Gothic diamond vault, the impressive Great Knight's Hall (30 m long, 16 m wide, 14 m high), the castle chapel with the early Baroque Christmas altar and the mysterious Sala terrena, a complete with pebble mosaic decorated party room.

Greinburg Castle in Grein on the Danube. You can see the oldest residential castle in Austria, which is also the city's landmark, from afar.
