Lindenhardt was first mentioned as villa Lindenharde and was owned by the Count Palatine von Wittelsbach in the 12th century. Bishop Otto the Holy of Bamberg founded the Church of Our Lady and made it subordinate to the Ensdorf Monastery. Later the place came into the possession of the burgraves of Nuremberg, the later margraves of Brandenburg-Kulmbach and Brandenburg-Bayreuth. In 1684 a large fire destroyed the village, to which the church also fell victim. Only five houses remained.

The late Gothic winged altar in the old fortified church contains a painting from 1503 that has been attributed to Mathias Grünewald since 1915: it shows Christ as the Man of Sorrows and the 14 helpers in need. The statues are by Michael Wolgemut. The altar was originally in the church of Bindlach. After a new altar had been made for this church, the Grünewald altar was given to the parish of Lindenhardt at the beginning of 1685, as the church and the altar had been destroyed by the fire. The altar was erected in 1687 in the rebuilt church of Lindenhardt.

A great church with a very interesting interior. There is a stamp here for pilgrims to St. James.

The beautiful historical altar is definitely worth a visit. According to other information, the church was open.
