In 1952, Federal President Theodor Heuss founded “Arbor Day” with a maple planting in the courtyard garden. The Bonn Hofgarten has seen a lot since Elector Clemens August had it laid out as an open-air part of his residence in the 18th century. When the Prussian king founded the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in 1818 and had it moved into the palace, the site became a meeting place for citizens and also a stronghold for demonstrations in the federal capital. Nowadays it is a popular place to stay for students, tourists and locals.

The Hofgarten was laid out in the 18th century as a park for the Electoral Palace (today's university building). Due to its central location, the Hofgarten is a popular meeting place.
Important demonstrations took place here, especially during the Bonn Republic, e.g. by the peace movement in the 1980s.
