The Ropa basin was colonized by Casimir III the Great, who “founded villages under German law at the foot of the Beskids and on the border with Silesia; around Myślenice, Tymbark, Grybów, Ciężkowice, as well as in the basin of Ropa, Wisłoka and on the border with Red Ruthenia. About 25% of the settlers were German. In the Middle Ages, Red Ruthenia, neighboring Lesser Poland, was inhabited by many Germans, often in dense clusters.
