At 1,920 m, the small chapel in Sulden is probably the highest Protestant chapel in Europe. In 1900, Count von Hohenthal zu Dölkau (Halle), with the support of Superintendent D. Paschke (Dieskau), founded a relief association to build this place of worship. The hotel owner Otto Schmidt from Sulden donated the building site and so construction could begin and it was inaugurated on July 30, 1911.

The Countess von Hohenthal donated the church bell, and the German Empress Auguste Viktoria donated an altar Bible. The large altarpiece “The Birth of the Savior” was created by the painter Elsa Weise from Halle. During the First World War, the chapel was used as an ammunition magazine, first by the Austrians and then by the Italians. The original bell, candlesticks and crucifix (carved by Fidelis Reinstadler from Sulden) were stolen. During the Second World War no services were allowed to be celebrated in the chapel.

In order to prevent the threat of expropriation, the chapel was placed under the protection of the Evangelical Community of A.B. Meran, which has looked after the church since it was transferred in 1957. After major damage caused by snow deposits on the roof area in the winter of 2013/14, the community is aiming to have the roof renovated in the near future, for which they are warmly appealing for donations.
