The mill dates back to 1498. Originally it was part of the fortress of the city of Werth as a defensive tower. In the 16th century it was converted into a grain mill and has an almost completely preserved drive and grinder from 1554.
In 1964, further modifications were made and the mill's actual grinding activity was stopped. The city of Isselburg has owned the windmill since 1994. The final renovation work was scheduled to be completed with a celebration on June 21, 2009, but was delayed until September (Wikipedia text).
