On the square at Vor Frelser Church in Horsens you can see the "Beringsøen" by the sculptor Kirsten Ortwed from 2002.
The water art shows an island and refers to the explorer Vitus Bering, who was born in Horsens in 1681. Vitus Bering was the leader of the expedition that proved the strait between Siberia and North America in 1728. During a later expedition in 1741, Vitus Bering died off the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula, later called Bering Island.
The black patinated bronze sculpture shows a landscape reminiscent of ice swings, in which stone surfaces are broken up by shiny surfaces.
