The Schenkenburg ruin is the landmark of Schenkenzell. It is one of the oldest castles in the Kinzig valley. The former inhabitants of the castle were the taverns of Zell, hence the name of the castle and the name Schenkenzell.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the Schenken zu Zell, who also gave the town its name. The spur position on a circulating mountain of the Kinzig already naturally guaranteed greater protection against attackers. The castle was the seat of the Schenken zu Zell and at the same time served to secure the mining area of Wittichen.
The castle ruins are worth a stop, but it is also one of the most beautiful photo opportunities in this section of the Kinzig valley.
