The SR2 is the successor model of the first small motorcycle SR1 manufactured by Simson in Suhl (Thuringia). It was presented for the first time at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1957 and, together with the modified SR2E model, with over 900,000 vehicles produced, was extremely popular in the GDR.
