The Saint-Georges Church is located in the heart of the village of Zimmerbach, in Haut-Rhin.
A first religious building was probably built during the 13th century. The nave was renovated for the first time in 1713, then rebuilt with a bell tower-porch in 1879. The plans were drawn up by the architect Charles Winckler. For this occasion, the church is also dedicated to the Sacred Heart.

While Église Saint-Georges itself is located within the urban, historic district of Vieux Lyon, there are no traditional hiking trails that start directly from the church. However, the surrounding area offers numerous opportunities for scenic walks along the Saône River banks and through the charming cobblestone streets of Vieux Lyon. These urban explorations can be quite extensive and enjoyable for walkers.

What are the best ways to get to Église Saint-Georges using public transport?

Église Saint-Georges is well-integrated into Lyon's public transport network. You can reach the Vieux Lyon district, where the church is located, via metro (Line D, Vieux Lyon - Cathédrale Saint-Jean station) or various bus lines. From the metro station, it's a short, pleasant walk through the historic streets to the church.

Is Église Saint-Georges suitable for a winter visit, and what can I expect?

Yes, Église Saint-Georges is a year-round destination. In winter, the exterior architecture remains striking, and the interior offers a warm, tranquil refuge. The stained glass windows by Maréchal de Metz cast beautiful patterns even on shorter winter days. While the surrounding streets might be colder, the historic charm of Vieux Lyon is still very much present, often with fewer crowds, making for a peaceful visit.

Are there any family-friendly activities or features at Église Saint-Georges?

While the church itself is a place of historical and architectural interest, which can engage older children, there aren't specific 'family-friendly activities' within the church. However, its location in Vieux Lyon means families can combine a visit with exploring the pedestrian-friendly streets, enjoying local shops, and perhaps a boat trip on the Saône, making for a broader family outing.

Is the area around Église Saint-Georges dog-friendly for walks?

The historic streets of Vieux Lyon are generally accessible for walks with leashed dogs. However, dogs are typically not permitted inside the church itself, as is common for places of worship. You can certainly enjoy strolls along the riverbanks and through the old town with your canine companion, taking turns to visit the church if needed.

What nearby amenities, such as cafes or restaurants, are available around Église Saint-Georges?

Being in the heart of Vieux Lyon, Église Saint-Georges is surrounded by a wealth of amenities. You'll find numerous traditional Lyonnaise bouchons, cafes, bakeries, and shops within a very short walking distance. Place Benoît-Crépu and the streets leading to it offer many options for refreshments or a full meal.

How long should I plan for a visit to Église Saint-Georges?

For a focused visit to appreciate the architecture and interior of Église Saint-Georges, you might spend 20-40 minutes. However, to truly experience its historical context and the beauty of its surroundings, including a walk along the Saône and through Vieux Lyon, you could easily dedicate 1-2 hours or more.

Are there any viewpoints near Église Saint-Georges that offer good photographic opportunities?

Absolutely! The most iconic views of Église Saint-Georges are from the Passerelle Saint-Georges suspension bridge, which spans the Saône River. From here, you get a fantastic perspective of the church's Neo-Gothic façade and elegant spire against the backdrop of Vieux Lyon. The riverbanks themselves also offer picturesque angles, especially during sunrise or sunset.

What is the historical significance of Église Saint-Georges beyond its architecture?

Église Saint-Georges boasts a rich history dating back to the 6th century, with its site being a place of worship for over 1500 years. It was associated with the Knights of Malta in the 13th century and has undergone multiple destructions and rebuildings, notably after the French Revolution and a devastating fire in 1854. Its resilience and continuous presence reflect Lyon's enduring spirit and faith, making it a living monument to the city's past.

    Is Église Saint-Georges wheelchair accessible?

Access to the exterior of Église Saint-Georges and the surrounding streets of Vieux Lyon can be challenging due to cobblestones and uneven surfaces. While the main entrance to the church might have steps, many historic churches in France offer alternative, more accessible entry points. It's advisable to check with the church directly or consult local accessibility guides for the most up-to-date information on interior access.
