Port city of Puglia, historical and functional in equal parts, Monopoli impresses the visitor with medieval churches and castles overlooking the Adriatic. It's also every painter's dream, with deep blue fishing boats adding a pop of color to the whitewashed harbor walls.

Here the seafaring tradition is alive and present in the historic fishing boats, in the port with its "gozzi" (the small boats of fishermen), in the calloused hands of shipwrights and shipbuilding craftsmen, in the infinite gazes of fishermen, but above all in that sense of community that is found and renewed in the maritime roots. The port, integrated into the urban fabric, acts as a link between the ancient center and the city. It is a multi-purpose port, as it is dedicated to both commercial traffic (fishing and various materials) and tourism. There are also shipyards in the port area, so it is easy to come across the construction of small and medium-sized hulls. Of Messapian origin, in the first centuries AD. it is populated by the inhabitants of Ignatia, who fled the destruction of their city by Totila's Goths. In the Middle Ages it became a flourishing commercial port among the most important in Puglia defended by its castle. In the new millennium, having passed under Norman rule, it was faithful to Frederick II who improved the defensive system by expanding the walls. After Federico's death it was under Angevin, then Aragonese and then Venetian domination. The Ottomans, after taking Otranto, avoided besieging Monopoli because it was difficult to conquer. From Venice, the city subsequently passed into the hands of the Habsburgs and then the Bourbons until the unification of Italy.

Among the important monuments are the cathedral dedicated to Maria Santissima della Madia (miracle of the raft) and the castle of Charles V.
