    Hiking

Biscuit Basin is known for its colorful thermal pools and geysers along the Firehole River. The area was named in the late 1880s for biscuit-shaped formations around Sapphire Pool, which were destroyed by an eruption after the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake. On July 23, 2024, a hydrothermal explosion at Black Diamond Pool sent steam and debris hundreds of feet into the air, damaging nearby boardwalks but fortunately causing no injuries. Both Black Diamond and Black Opal Pools became murky, with ongoing hazards of small explosions. For safety, Biscuit Basin is closed for the rest of 2024.
